For the upright in heart, a light has dawned in the darkness: the Lord, full of compassion, just and merciful (Ps 111:4).

Sin is an obstacle that prevents us from living and doing God’s will. Let us place our hope in Jesus, the Lamb who frees and saves humanity, celebrating the joy of being, through him, sons and daughters of the Father.

First Reading: 1 John 2:29-3:6

A reading from the first letter of Saint John – Beloved, 29since you know that he is righteous, you also know that everyone who practices righteousness is born of him. 3:1See what great love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! If the world does not know us, it is because it did not know the Father. 2Beloved, we are children of God already, and what we will be has not yet been revealed. We know that when Jesus appears, we will be like him, because we will see him as he is. 3 Everyone who waits for him purifies himself, just as he is pure. 4 Everyone who commits sin also commits lawlessness, for sin is lawlessness. 5 You know that he appeared to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. 6 Everyone who sins shows that he has neither seen him nor known him. – The word of the Lord.

A reading from the Gospel of Jesus Christ according to John – 29The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. 30I said of him, ‘After me comes a man who has ranked ahead of me, because he existed before me.’ 31I did not know him either, but I came baptizing with water so that he might be revealed to Israel.” 32And John testified, saying, “I saw the Spirit descend like a dove from heaven and remain on him. 33I did not know him either, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘On whomever you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ 34I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God!” – Word of salvation.

Reflection:

A concrete sign of recognition that Jesus is the “Lamb of God”, the beloved Son of the Father, is the presence of the Holy Spirit upon him. This is the sign that enlightens John and makes him recognize that his mission in the world is complete. Now begins a new time, the “next day”. The title “Lamb of God” refers to the Passover lamb and the lamb that was offered each day in the temple. It also refers to the servant of Yahweh announced by Isaiah (cf. Is 53:7), who brings salvation to the world through his suffering, thus anticipating the destiny of our Savior. The more we recognize the Son of God as the “Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world,” the closer our bonds with Him will be and the further away from sin we will be.Para os retos de coração surgiu nas trevas uma luz: o Senhor cheio de compaixão, justo e misericordioso (Sl 111,4).

O pecado é obstáculo que nos impede de viver e realizar a vontade de Deus. Depositemos nossa esperança em Jesus, o Cordeiro que liberta e salva a humanidade, celebrando a alegria de sermos, por meio dele, filhos e filhas do Pai.

Primeira Leitura: 1 João 2,29-3,6

Leitura da primeira carta de São João – Caríssimos, 29já que sabeis que ele é justo, sabei também que todo aquele que pratica a justiça nasceu dele. 3,1Vede que grande presente de amor o Pai nos deu: de sermos chamados filhos de Deus! E nós o somos! Se o mundo não nos conhece, é porque não conheceu o Pai. 2Caríssimos, desde já somos filhos de Deus, mas nem sequer se manifestou o que seremos! Sabemos que, quando Jesus se manifestar, seremos semelhantes a ele, porque o veremos tal como ele é. 3Todo o que espera nele purifica-se a si mesmo, como também ele é puro. 4Todo o que comete pecado comete também a iniquidade, porque o pecado é a iniquidade. 5Vós sabeis que ele se manifestou para tirar os pecados e que nele não há pecado. 6Todo aquele que peca mostra que não o viu nem o conheceu. – Palavra do Senhor.

Evangelho: João 1,29-34

Proclamação do Evangelho de Jesus Cristo segundo João – 29No dia seguinte, João viu Jesus aproximar-se dele e disse: “Eis o Cordeiro de Deus, que tira o pecado do mundo. 30Dele é que eu disse: Depois de mim vem um homem que passou à minha frente, porque existia antes de mim. 31Também eu não o conhecia, mas, se eu vim batizar com água, foi para que ele fosse manifestado a Israel”. 32E João deu testemunho, dizendo: “Eu vi o Espírito descer, como uma pomba, do céu e permanecer sobre ele. 33Também eu não o conhecia, mas aquele que me enviou a batizar com água me disse: ‘Aquele sobre quem vires o Espírito descer e permanecer, esse é quem batiza com o Espírito Santo’. 34Eu vi e dou testemunho: este é o Filho de Deus!” – Palavra da salvação.

Reflexão:

Sinal concreto de reconhecimento de que Jesus é o “Cordeiro de Deus”, o Filho amado do Pai, é a presença do Espírito Santo sobre ele. Esse é o sinal que ilumina João e o faz reconhecer que sua missão no mundo está completa. Inicia agora um novo tempo, o “dia seguinte”. O título “Cordeiro de Deus” se refere ao cordeiro pascal e ao cordeiro que, a cada dia, era oferecido no templo. Faz ainda referência ao servo de Javé anunciado por Isaías (cf. Is 53,7), que traz a salvação ao mundo através do seu sofrimento, antecipando, desse modo, o destino do nosso Salvador. Quanto mais reconhecermos o Filho de Deus como “Cordeiro de Deus que tira o pecado do mundo”, mais estreitos serão nossos laços com ele e mais distantes do pecado estaremos.
