God sent his Son, born of a woman, so that we might all receive adoption as sons (Gal 4:4ff).

Only by remaining in Jesus can we overcome sin, love our brothers and sisters, and follow the path of righteousness. In our encounter with Christ, let us celebrate the joys of Christmas time in communion with all of God’s people.

First Reading: 1 John 3:7-10

Reading from the first letter of Saint John – 7Little children, let no one lead you astray. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, just as he is righteous. 8Whoever commits sin is of the devil, for the devil has been a sinner from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. 9No one who has been born of God commits sin, for God’s seed remains in him; he cannot sin, because he has been born of God. 10This is how it is clear who is a child of God and who is a child of the devil: Whoever does not do what is right is not a child of God, nor is anyone who does not love his brother. – The Word of the Lord.

The ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.

Gospel: John 1:35-42

After he spoke in the past to our fathers through the prophets many times, / in our day God has spoken to us through his Son (Heb 1:1ff). – R.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to John – At that time, 35John was again with two of his disciples 36and when he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!” 37When the two disciples heard this, they followed Jesus. 38When they turned and saw that they were following him, Jesus asked them, “What are you looking for?” They said to him, “Rabbi (which means Teacher), where are you staying?” 39Jesus answered, “Come and see.” So they went to see where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day. It was about four in the afternoon. 40Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard John’s words and followed Jesus. 41He went straight away to his brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means Christ). 42Then Andrew brought Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon, son of John; you will be called Cephas” (which means Rock). – Word of salvation.

Reflection:

In our daily lives, we often use the expression “he who seeks, finds.” This is exactly the idea that today’s Gospel presents to us, linking Jesus’ initial question – “What are you looking for?” – to the disciples’ subsequent statement: “We have found the Messiah.” When the disciples ask Jesus where he lives, they expect more than an answer about where his house is. This is what happens, because after going and seeing, they discover who Jesus is, they discover his identity. Andrew will then say that he has found the Messiah, synonymous with Christ, the liberator that the people of Israel were waiting for. Today’s disciple, when he has the concrete experience of encountering Christ, is also dazzled by the mystery of his person, a mystery that, through its excess of meaning, transforms our existence.

Deus enviou o seu Filho, nascido de uma mulher, para que todos recebêssemos a filiação adotiva (Gl 4,4s).

Somente permanecendo em Jesus, vencemos o pecado, amamos nossos irmãos e irmãs e trilhamos o caminho da justiça. Neste nosso encontro com Cristo, celebremos as alegrias do tempo do Natal em comunhão com todo o povo de Deus.

Primeira Leitura: 1 João 3,7-10

Leitura da primeira carta de São João – 7Filhinhos, que ninguém vos desencaminhe. O que pratica a justiça é justo, assim como ele é justo. 8Aquele que comete o pecado é do diabo, porque o diabo é pecador desde o princípio. Para isto é que o Filho de Deus se manifestou: para destruir as obras do diabo. 9Todo aquele que nasceu de Deus não comete pecado, porque a semente de Deus fica nele; ele não pode pecar, pois nasceu de Deus. 10Nisto se revela quem é filho de Deus e quem é filho do diabo: todo o que não pratica a justiça não é de Deus, nem aquele que não ama o seu irmão. – Palavra do Senhor.

Evangelho: João 1,35-42

Depois de ter falado, no passado, / aos nossos pais, pelos profetas, muitas vezes, / em nossos dias Deus falou-nos por seu Filho (Hb 1,1s). – R.

Proclamação do Evangelho de Jesus Cristo segundo João – Naquele tempo, 35João estava de novo com dois de seus discípulos 36e, vendo Jesus passar, disse: “Eis o Cordeiro de Deus!” 37Ouvindo essas palavras, os dois discípulos seguiram Jesus. 38Voltando-se para eles e vendo que o estavam seguindo, Jesus perguntou: “O que estais procurando?” Eles disseram: “Rabi (que quer dizer Mestre), onde moras?” 39Jesus respondeu: “Vinde ver”. Foram, pois, ver onde ele morava e, nesse dia, permaneceram com ele. Era por volta das quatro da tarde. 40André, irmão de Simão Pedro, era um dos dois que ouviram as palavras de João e seguiram Jesus. 41Ele foi logo encontrar seu irmão Simão e lhe disse: “Encontramos o Messias” (que quer dizer Cristo). 42Então André conduziu Simão a Jesus. Jesus olhou bem para ele e disse: “Tu és Simão, filho de João; tu serás chamado Cefas” (que quer dizer Pedra). – Palavra da salvação.

Reflexão:

No cotidiano, costumamos utilizar a expressão “quem procura, acha”. É exatamente essa ideia que o Evangelho de hoje nos apresenta, unindo a pergunta inicial de Jesus – “O que vocês estão procurando?” – à afirmação posterior dos discípulos: “Nós encontramos o Messias”. Quando os discípulos perguntam a Jesus onde mora, esperam mais do que uma resposta sobre o lugar da sua casa. É isso que acontece, pois, depois de ir e ver, descobrem quem é Jesus, descobrem sua identidade. André dirá, então, que encontrou o Messias, sinônimo de Cristo, o libertador que o povo de Israel esperava. O discípulo de hoje, quando faz a experiência concreta de encontro com Cristo, também é deslumbrado pelo mistério da sua pessoa, mistério que, pelo excesso de sentido, transforma nossa existência.
