God sent his Son, born of a woman, so that we might all receive adoption as sons (Gal 4:4ff).

This liturgy exhorts us to put the Lord at the center of our lives, because “he must increase, but I must decrease.” We are also invited to enter into communion with God, convinced that “if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.” Let us celebrate with faith.

First Reading: 1 John 5:14-21

Reading from the first letter of Saint John – Beloved, 14This is the confidence we have in God, that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. 15And if we know that he hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have what we asked. 16If anyone sees his brother sinning a sin not leading to death, he should ask, and God will give him life—if indeed the sin committed does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death, but I do not say that we should pray about this. 17 All wickedness is sin, but there is a sin that does not lead to death. 18 We know that no one who is born of God sins; the one who is begotten by God keeps himself, and the evil one cannot touch him. 19 We know that we are from God, but the whole world lies in the power of the evil one. 20 We know that the Son of God came and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are with him who is true in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life. 21 My little children, keep yourselves from idols. – The word of the Lord.

The Lord loves his people, the truth.

Gospel: John 3,22-30

The people sitting in darkness / have seen a great light; / those living in the shadow of death, / upon them has light shone (Mt 4,16). – R.

Proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ according to John – At that time, 22Jesus went with his disciples to the region of Judea. There he stayed with them and baptized. 23John was also baptizing in Aenon near Salim, where there was plenty of water. People were coming and being baptized there. 24John had not yet been put in prison. 25Some of John’s disciples were arguing with a Jew about purification. 26They came to John and said, “Rabbi, the one who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom you testified, is now baptizing, and everyone is going to him.” 27John answered, “No one can receive anything unless it has been given to him from heaven. 28You yourselves bear witness to what I said: ‘I am not the Messiah, but I have been sent ahead of him.’ 29It is the bridegroom who receives the bride, but the friend who stands and listens to him rejoices when he hears the bridegroom’s voice. This is my joy, and it is complete. 30He must increase, but I must decrease.” – The Word of the Savior.

Reflection:

The Son of God came into the world so that we might know the truth, which is God himself. When we listen to and allow ourselves to be guided by Jesus and his Gospel, we are filled with an enormous joy, similar to that felt by John the Baptist. A joy that is not momentary, but remains for eternal life. A joy that fills our lives with meaning and enthusiasm. A joy that motivates us for the mission of continuing in the world the same mission begun by Jesus. This joy does not divide, as some of John's disciples insinuated, but unites all those who follow the truth and are purified by it.

Deus enviou o seu Filho, nascido de uma mulher, para que todos recebêssemos a filiação adotiva (Gl 4,4s).

Esta liturgia nos exorta a pôr o Senhor no centro de nossa vida, pois “é necessário que ele cresça e eu diminua”. Somos também convidados a entrar em comunhão com Deus, convictos de que, “se pedirmos alguma coisa de acordo com sua vontade, ele nos ouve”. Celebremos com fé.

Primeira Leitura: 1 João 5,14-21

Leitura da primeira carta de São João – Caríssimos, 14esta é a confiança que temos em Deus: se lhe pedimos alguma coisa de acordo com a sua vontade, ele nos ouve. 15E se sabemos que ele nos ouve em tudo o que lhe pedimos, sabemos que possuímos o que havíamos pedido. 16Se alguém vê seu irmão cometer um pecado que não conduz à morte, que ele reze, e Deus lhe dará a vida; isso se, de fato, o pecado cometido não conduz à morte. Existe um pecado que conduz à morte, mas não é a respeito deste que eu digo que se deve rezar. 17Toda iniquidade é pecado, mas existe pecado que não conduz à morte. 18Sabemos que todo aquele que nasceu de Deus não peca. Aquele que é gerado por Deus o guarda, e o maligno não o pode atingir. 19Nós sabemos que somos de Deus, ao passo que o mundo inteiro está sob o poder do maligno. 20Nós sabemos que veio o Filho de Deus e nos deu inteligência para conhecermos aquele que é o verdadeiro. Evangelho: João 3,22-30

Proclamação do Evangelho de Jesus Cristo segundo João – Naquele tempo, 22Jesus foi com seus discípulos para a região da Judeia. Permaneceu aí com eles e batizava. 23Também João estava batizando, em Enon, perto de Salim, onde havia muita água. Aí chegavam as pessoas e eram batizadas. 24João ainda não tinha sido posto no cárcere. 25Alguns discípulos de João estavam discutindo com um judeu a respeito da purificação. 26Foram a João e disseram: “Rabi, aquele que estava contigo além do Jordão, e do qual tu deste testemunho, agora está batizando, e todos vão a ele”. 27João respondeu: “Ninguém pode receber alguma coisa se não lhe for dada do céu. 28Vós mesmos sois testemunhas daquilo que eu disse: ‘Eu não sou o Messias, mas fui enviado na frente dele’. 29É o noivo que recebe a noiva, mas o amigo, que está presente e o escuta, enche-se de alegria ao ouvir a voz do noivo. Esta é a minha alegria, e ela é completa. 30É necessário que ele cresça e eu diminua”. – Palavra da salvação.

Reflexão:

O Filho de Deus veio ao mundo para que conhecêssemos a verdade, que é o próprio Deus. Quando escutamos e nos deixamos guiar por Jesus e seu Evangelho, somos tomados por uma enorme alegria, semelhante à sentida por João Batista. Alegria que não é momentânea, mas permanece para a vida eterna. Alegria que enche nossa vida de sentido e entusiasmo. Alegria que nos motiva para a missão de continuar no mundo a mesma missão iniciada por Jesus. Essa alegria não divide, como insinuaram alguns dos discípulos de João, mas une todos os que seguem a verdade e são purificados por ela.
