The liturgy invites us to renew our adherence to Christ, with the certainty that “whoever confesses the Son also has the Father,” in the unity of the Spirit. Grounded in this faith, the bishops Basil and Gregory vigorously fought the heresies of their time. They lived in the 4th century and left writings that constitute solid nourishment for Christians. Following their example, let us place our voice at the service of the Gospel and practice this truth “with fidelity and love.”

First Reading: 1 John 2:22-28

Reading from the first letter of Saint John – Beloved: 22Who is a liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? The antichrist is he who denies the Father and the Son. 23Whoever denies the Son does not have the Father. Whoever acknowledges the Son has the Father also. 24Let what you have heard from the beginning abide in you. If what you have heard from the beginning abides in you, you will abide in the Son and in the Father. 25And this is the promise he has made to us—eternal life. 26I am writing this to those who are trying to mislead you. 27But as for you, the anointing you have received from Jesus abides in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. His anointing teaches you everything, and it is true and not a lie. Therefore, just as the anointing he has taught you, abide in him. 28So now, little children, abide in him. A reading from the holy Gospel according to John – 19This was the testimony of John when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” 20John confessed and did not deny. He confessed, “I am not the Messiah.” 21They asked him, “Who then are you? Are you Elijah?” John answered, “I am not.” They asked him, “Are you the prophet?” He answered, “No.” 22They asked him, “Who then are you? We must give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” 23John answered, “I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as the prophet Isaiah said.” 24Now those who had been sent were from the Pharisees 25and they asked him, “Why then are you baptizing if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?” 26John answered, “I baptize with water, but among you stands one whom you do not know, 27who is coming after me. Reflection:

The testimony of John the Baptist announces a new time in the history of salvation, pointing to the true and only “Lamb of God.” In today’s Gospel, we see John’s threefold “denial,” which recalls Peter’s, but which, in fact, is in contrast to it. In his humility and wisdom, John affirms, three times, “I am not,” because he knows that the title “I am” is reserved only for the Son of God. In this way, he recognizes his role as a prophet who came to prepare the way for the Lord and who must disappear when Jesus begins his public life. The geographical reference at the end of the text is interesting. Bethany means “house of the poor” or “house of affliction”, it was a very special place for Jesus, where he took refuge a few times, especially because his great friends Lazarus, Martha and Mary lived there.

A liturgia nos convida a renovar nossa adesão a Cristo, com a certeza de que “quem confessa o Filho possui também o Pai”, na unidade do Espírito. Alicerçados nessa fé, os santos Basílio e Gregório, bispos, combateram com vigor as heresias do seu tempo. Viveram no século 4º e deixaram escritos que constituem sólido alimento para os cristãos. A seu exemplo, coloquemos nossa voz a serviço do Evangelho e pratiquemos essa verdade “com fidelidade e amor”.

Primeira Leitura: 1 João 2,22-28

Leitura da primeira carta de São João – Caríssimos, 22quem é mentiroso, senão aquele que nega que Jesus é o Cristo? O anticristo é aquele que nega o Pai e o Filho. 23Todo aquele que nega o Filho também não possui o Pai. Quem confessa o Filho possui também o Pai. 24Permaneça dentro de vós aquilo que ouvistes desde o princípio. Se o que ouvistes desde o princípio permanecer em vós, permanecereis com o Filho e com o Pai. 25E esta é a promessa que ele nos fez: a vida eterna. 26Escrevo isso a respeito dos que procuram desencaminhar-vos. 27Quanto a vós mesmos, a unção que recebestes da parte de Jesus permanece convosco, e não tendes necessidade de que alguém vos ensine. A sua unção vos ensina tudo, e ela é verdadeira, e não mentirosa. Por isso, conforme a unção de Jesus vos ensinou, permanecei nele. 28Então, agora, filhinhos, permanecei nele. Assim poderemos ter plena confiança quando ele se manifestar e não seremos vergonhosamente afastados dele quando da sua vinda. – Palavra do Senhor.

Proclamação do Evangelho de Jesus Cristo segundo João – 19Este foi o testemunho de João quando os judeus enviaram de Jerusalém sacerdotes e levitas para perguntar: “Quem és tu?” 20João confessou e não negou. Eles perguntaram: “És o profeta?” Ele respondeu: “Não”. 22Perguntaram então: “Quem és, afinal? Temos que levar uma resposta para aqueles que nos enviaram. O que dizes de ti mesmo?” 23João declarou: “Eu sou a voz que grita no deserto: ‘Aplainai o caminho do Senhor’ – conforme disse o profeta Isaías”. 24Ora, os que tinham sido enviados pertenciam aos fariseus 25e perguntaram: “Por que então andas batizando se não és o Messias, nem Elias, nem o profeta?” 26João respondeu: “Eu batizo com água; mas no meio de vós está aquele que vós não conheceis 27e que vem depois de mim. Eu não mereço desamarrar a correia de suas sandálias”. 28Isso aconteceu em Betânia além do Jordão, onde João estava batizando. – Palavra da salvação.

Reflexão:

O testemunho de João Batista anuncia um novo tempo na história da salvação, apontando para o verdadeiro e único “cordeiro de Deus”. No Evangelho de hoje, vemos a tríplice “negação” de João, que faz recordar a de Pedro, mas que, na verdade, se contrapõe a ela. Na sua humildade e sabedoria, João afirma, por três vezes, “não sou”, pois sabe que o título “eu sou” é reservado somente ao Filho de Deus. Reconhece, assim, seu papel de profeta que veio para preparar os caminhos do Senhor e que deve desaparecer quando Jesus iniciar sua vida pública. É interessante a referência geográfica, ao final do texto. Betânia significa “casa dos pobres” ou “casa de aflição”, foi um lugar muito especial para Jesus, onde se refugiou algumas vezes, sobretudo porque ali habitavam seus grandes amigos Lázaro, Marta e Maria.
