At the end of the Christmas season, we gather for the feast of the Baptism of Jesus, who went about doing good in the world. By seeking baptism, the Son of God shows solidarity with all people; anointed by the Spirit, he publicly assumes the mission of salvation. The Lord calls us, baptized in the name of the Trinity, to build a better world.

First Reading: Isaiah 42:1-4.6-7

Baptized and anointed by the Spirit, we are servants of the Kingdom that Jesus came to establish out of love for humanity. Let us joyfully welcome the Good News of peace.

A reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah – Thus says the Lord: 1“Here is my servant; I welcome him; My chosen one, my soul delights in him; I have put my spirit upon him; he will bring justice to the nations. 2 He will not cry out or raise his voice, nor will he make himself heard in the streets. 3 He will not break a bruised reed or snuff out a smoldering wick, but he will bring justice to the truth. 4 He will not grow weary or discouraged until he has established justice in the earth; distant lands wait for his teaching. 6 I, the Lord, have called you in righteousness; I have taken hold of your hand; I have formed you and appointed you a covenant for the people, a light to the nations, 7 to open the eyes of the blind, to bring out prisoners from the prison, to free from the dungeon those who sit in darkness.” – The Word of the Lord.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke – At that time, 15the people were in expectation, and everyone wondered in their hearts if John might not be the Messiah. 16So John said to them all, “I baptize you with water, but one who is mightier than I is coming. I am not worthy to untie the strap of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.” 21While all the people were being baptized, Jesus was also baptized. And while he was praying, the heavens were opened, 22and the Holy Spirit descended on Jesus in visible form, like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” – Word of salvation.

Reflection:

The people were in expectation of the coming of a deliverer, and they wondered if John might not be the Messiah. John clarifies, saying that someone “stronger” than he would come. He does not want to be confused with the Messiah. He simply baptizes with water, a sign of purification and conversion, and puts himself at service. The one who is to come will baptize with “spirit and fire,” a baptism of salvation and judgment. It is the dynamism of the spirit and the fire of Pentecost that encourages Jesus’ followers to live and proclaim the Good News of the Messiah. Jesus mingles with the people and seeks John’s baptism. While he is being baptized, the heavens open and proclaim that Jesus is the “beloved Son.” The feast of Jesus’ baptism is a propitious occasion to reflect and renew our baptismal commitment. Following the example of John the Baptist, we are called to proclaim the “strongest” and not to exalt ourselves. Baptism commits us to Jesus’ project. Enlightened by the Spirit, we strengthen and renew our fidelity in following Jesus.

Batizado o Senhor, os céus se abriram e, como uma pomba, o Espírito pairou sobre ele. Então a voz do Pai se fez ouvir: Este é o meu Filho dileto, nele está todo o meu amor (Mt 3,16ss).

Concluindo o tempo do Natal, reunimo-nos para a festa do Batismo de Jesus, que passou pelo mundo fazendo o bem. Ao buscar o batismo, o Filho de Deus se solidariza com todo o povo; ungido pelo Espírito, assume publicamente a missão salvadora. A nós, batizados em nome da Trindade, o Senhor nos chama a construir um mundo melhor.

Proclamação do Evangelho de Jesus Cristo segundo Lucas – Naquele tempo, 15o povo estava na expectativa e todos se perguntavam no seu íntimo se João não seria o Messias. 16Por isso, João declarou a todos: “Eu vos batizo com água, mas virá aquele que é mais forte do que eu. Eu não sou digno de desamarrar a correia de suas sandálias. Ele vos batizará no Espírito Santo e no fogo”. 21Quando todo o povo estava sendo batizado, Jesus também recebeu o batismo. E, enquanto rezava, o céu se abriu 22e o Espírito Santo desceu sobre Jesus em forma visível, como pomba. E do céu veio uma voz: “Tu és o meu Filho amado, em ti ponho o meu benquerer”. – Palavra da salvação.

Reflexão:

O povo vivia em expectativa pela vinda de um libertador e se perguntava se João não seria o Messias. João esclarece, dizendo que viria alguém “mais forte” do que ele. Não quer ser confundido com o Messias. Ele simplesmente batiza com água, sinal de purificação e de conversão, e se coloca a serviço. O que há de vir batizará com “espírito e fogo”, batismo de salvação e julgamento. É o dinamismo do espírito e o fogo de Pentecostes que anima os seguidores de Jesus para a vivência e o anúncio da Boa-nova do Messias. Jesus se mistura ao povo e busca o batismo de João. Enquanto é batizado, o céu se abre e proclama que Jesus é o “Filho amado”. A festa do batismo de Jesus é ocasião propícia para refletir e renovar nosso compromisso batismal. A exemplo de João Batista, somos chamados a proclamar o “mais forte” e não exaltar a nós mesmos. O batismo nos compromete com o projeto de Jesus. Iluminados pelo Espírito, fortalecemos e renovamos nossa fidelidade no seguimento a Jesus.
