This eschatological discourse brings the disciple to a profound reflection on how to behave in the face of what may happen to the world and to himself in relation to the salvation desired by God for all. The central issue is that God made us for Himself, and we have strayed from His salvific plan. He has not abandoned us, but expects a faithful response from each of us. We must not forget that we live in a passing world, that we were not made to live here, because our future is God Himself. To attain eternal life, we will go through God's judgment that will happen according to His designs. In the meantime, we must remain attentive, alert, vigilant, available and faithful to Him.

2. Jesus uses two important models from the Old Testament to indicate the day of judgment: Noah and Lot. The first concerns the flood. During the preparation of the Ark, the people did not pay attention to Noah or his words; They lived their usual life, in the monotony of everyday life, with their worldly concerns, living their vices and their interests without worrying about their salvation. For those people, what Noah did was foolishness, the madness of a fanatic. The second model is Lot, who lived in a context where promiscuity was rampant, disrespect for the body and for human beings in general was enormous; an environment where God was not invited. The daily lives of those people of Sodom happened according to the instincts and games of interest of each one; no one worried about the things of God and, for that very reason, they did not care about their own salvation, because for them, being saved was the same as giving oneself over to the pleasures of the flesh, the joys of the world, among other things.

3. Jesus asks us not to be afraid to sacrifice ourselves in order to gain life. It is important to emphasize that our life is a gift from God and as such it exists to be donated, given. This surrender of oneself must occur first to God. To be aware that we belong primarily to God, that we belong to Him and that we must surrender ourselves to Him; then, because of Him, to be a gift to all, without reservations, without fear, trusting in the love and power of God. We are a gift aimed at eternal life. Therefore, attachment to earthly things, not wanting to die because of the things of the world, is a very strong sign that one does not know the gift that one is, of one’s own future in God, that one does not know the origin, life and purpose of the existence that one has. Wanting to save one’s life in this world is the same as rejecting God’s salvation. Therefore, it is necessary, for salvation, to despise life in this world, and not to be afraid to sacrifice one’s own life, faithfully, so that the Father’s plan may be fulfilled.

4. The righteous will be separated from sinners. The righteous here are all those who sacrifice their own lives in the name of God, so that God may carry out His will in the world. Sinners, on the other hand, are those who insist on remaining in sin, attached to the world and its pleasures, who do not care about God's will and even try to turn God's children away from their path of salvation. In the judgment, these will be separated: some will go to God (the righteous), others to eternal death. Everyone will go through the judgment, but not everyone will have the same fate.

5. Where will this happen, his disciples ask? Jesus uses an enigmatic proverb to help everyone reflect: “Wherever the corpse is, there the vultures will gather”, that is, the judgment will happen wherever man is. The judgment will happen according to the time determined by God, in the place that God wants, independently of human will and control. God's action is free and will take place when it seems to Him the right time, because what matters most to Him is the salvation of all. He does not want to lose anyone, but respects the freedom of choice made. The important thing is that we be faithful, free to say yes to God's will, available to carry out His plan of salvation, persevering in prayer and obedience, servants out of love, aware of who we are, who we will be and of our mission in the world, always alert, vigilant and with our eyes fixed on the Lord.

A big and affectionate hug.
